Career Help

The job search, at times, is a challenging task that makes one feel energized and enthusiastic at one point, yet frustrated and sad the next moment. However, these feelings are no reason for undue concern. We need to keep up with our daily activities and continue with the job search. Below is an overview of some activities that will help you to stand out.

1.  Plan and Organize
  • A successful job search requires you to plan and organize so that the goals are attainable and realistic. The goal is to maximize interviews, and ultimately job offers.

2.  Join industry-related organizations
  • Like education, joining industry-related organizations can also increase your field knowledge. These organizations will also provide a networking forum for new career opportunities. Business executives, consultants, and owners make up a large portion of groups' board of directors, advisory committees, marketing teams, and public relations personnel. These types of contacts can become invaluable to a jobseeker.

3.  Perform your own public relations and marketing campaigns
  • Public relations and marketing campaigns work in correlation with organizations, the resume, and continued education. Adding to one's experience, networking pool, and beefing up the marketing documents that represent themselves can prove to be crucial marketing and PR steps to increase chances of landing a better job or a higher paying salary.

4.  Maintain a Career Journal
  • Everyone should maintain a career journal. This journal should be a complete log of career advancements, achievements, bonuses, and short and long-term goals. Achievements are documented abilities provided to an employer. These abilities are, in essence, 'proof' that you are worth your weight in gold.

5.  Diversify
  • Focus on the transferable skills and not be overly concerned about fitting in a certain industry. There are new industries that can benefit from your abilities. Broadening the industries will enable you to increase the chances of interviews, leading to more job opportunities.

6.  Internship or Temp Job
  • Employers tend to hire people with known qualities, usually preferring someone they are familiar with. This is less risky and faster than hiring a stranger who responds to an advertisement. Thus, if you can get an internship or a temporary/contract assignment with a company, it will give yourself an opportunity to try out for a full-time position.

7.  Career Fairs
  • Attend career fairs and make it a point of talking to the recruiters that you meet. These recruiters want to find suitable candidates for the organization. They will get to know you as an actual person instead of just another name on a resume.

8.  Continue Education
  • This one seems like a "no brainer", but with the hectic schedules some workers maintain, it's a surprise they find time for anything non-work or home-life related. Online universities are making it extremely easy to continue one's education...utilize these resources! Knowledge and know-how will increase your worth.
